“The ants go marching one by one” is a common childhood song, but during this time of year for homeowners all across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, the lyrics should be changed to “The fleas go marching one by one!” That’s right; we are smack dab in the middle of flea season which means that if you are not vigilant, fleas may make their way into your home on you, your pets, or even that used couch that you got a great deal on. Fleas are more than just a nuisance; they bite leaving behind painful, itchy, unsightly marks and are capable of transmitting diseases and parasites.

Before you can start to treat for a flea infestation, you first have to identify that fleas are actually the culprit. Unfortunately for us all, there are quite a few pests that leave behind bite marks! Flea bites are often confused with spider bites, bed bug bites, ant bites, and mosquito bites. The following information can be used to help identify flea bites:

  • Flea bites are commonly found in groups of 3 or 4 and are usually located on ankles, elbows, in armpits or the bend of knees.

  • Flea bites will have only one puncture mark in the center of the bite.

  • There is a red swollen area found around the bite.

  • Flea bites are associated with a constant itch that can result in a lot of scratching that can lead to bleeding and infection.

  • If a person is allergic to flea bites, they may develop hives, difficulty breathing, and other allergic symptoms.

  • Seeing actual fleas in your home or on your pets, furniture, bedding (human or pet), or carpet areas.

If you know that fleas have gotten into your home or even just think that you may have a flea problem, the best course of action to take is to contact a professional pest control expert because let’s face it, even if it turns out that fleas aren’t causing the bites, whatever the pest, they need to be eradicated from your home as quickly as possible!
