Having a squirrel or chipmunk or any rodent, for that matter, in your home can be a real nuisance. They scratch and dig in your walls at all hours of the day and night. They build nests inside and damage your homes interior. They can be a real hazard to the safety of your family and cause health risks to those with allergies. They can also bring in other pests like fleas and ticks. Needless to say these rodent pests can truly drive you nuts.

Squirrels and chipmunks come with very similar threats to you and your home. Their main reasoning for coming in is to find shelter and if they are lucky food and water. They can get in through chimneys, gaps around venting, cracks in the siding and any small hole in the exterior of your home. It is common to find them within your walls, in attics and crawl spaces. Once you hear one of these pests inside, it does not take long to have a full blown infestation. If they find that they can stay out of sight and build a nest they will start to mate and reproduce.

It’s easy to tell the difference between a squirrel and a chipmunk. Squirrels are usually larger than chipmunks and the most common squirrel in United States is the eastern gray squirrel. Chipmunks are smaller and a brown color with two distinctive dark brown stripes going down their backs. They both eat nuts and primarily live in trees and are found throughout the United States and hibernate throughout the winter.

One of the major problems with rodents living in your home is that they can be very destructive when building their nests. They will chew through wires, insulation, sheet rock and screens to build their nests. When they damage these materials it can lead to hidden fire hazards that you are unaware of.
