One of the most formidable summer pests has got to be the tick. These parasitic bugs are found all over New England feasting on our pets and, all too frequently, on us from spring right through the fall. Ticks are typically found in wooded areas, in overgrown areas, in bushes, and in fields. Essentially, this means ticks can be just about everywhere in our area. This year, thanks to a relatively mild winter, tick season is expected to be worse than normal years.
For this reason, it is now more important than ever that any pet or person who spends time outside be protected from ticks. That includes vet recommended flea and tick repellent for our animals as well as checking them over for ticks in their fur. Ticks are nothing to take lightly; so you want to check out clothing and skin for ticks that you might have picked up whether you were hiking through the woods or just playing in the backyard.
These pests can do much more than just bite without you being aware of it. They frequently carry and transmit several diseases to human and pet hosts including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, recurring fevers, and, of course, Lyme disease. It isn’t uncommon for someone to show symptoms of these conditions before they even are aware they have been bitten. The effects of many tick-borne illnesses can have serious consequences and long-term related health issues.
Each May, just in time for the start of tick season, is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. It is the perfect time for organizations all over the country to sponsor walks and road races as well as other events to help bring awareness and much-needed funds for the research of Lyme disease and for the development of viable treatments. It is likely that you have seen many signs and ads running reminding you to keep a watchful eye out for ticks as they are one of the top known carriers of Lyme to affect both people and pets.
