In the fall, carpenter ants instinctually eat more, knowing that they may not have a food supply in the winter. This extra bulk, coupled with their slower movement, keeps them alive through the winter until they can eat again and become more active in the spring.

While carpenter ants living in outdoor colonies are not as active in winter, that’s not the case for carpenter ants who have the good fortune of finding an indoor location in which to dwell. As long as carpenter ants have a warm enough climate and a steady food source, they will remain as active as they are during summer.
