can cockroaches in rhode island bite

Here are Big Blue Bug Solutions, our New England pest control professionals can think of many good reasons why you wouldn’t want cockroaches inside your home. Do you know what they are? Sure, they are a whole lot of ugly and creepy mixed together but that is just skimming the surface. Here are some of our top reasons for avoiding a cockroach infestation is just plain smart!

Cockroaches bite. Yes, roaches can actually bite. These insects are omnivores, which means they will eat anything and don’t usually go for humans, but in exceptionally large infestations where there is not enough food for cockroach populations, they have been known to nibble on humans. German cockroaches are especially known for biting, but other species are capable of biting as well. Do roaches bite people regularly? The answer is no, a cockroach bite is not typical and some professionals don’t think they ever bite live humans. A cockroach bite may be rare, but it’s not impossible. If you have one, it may be a raised red welt and feel itchy; try to avoid scratching it to limit the possibility of a secondary infection.

Cockroaches spread disease. If you consider the fact that these hardy creatures hang out in sewers and forage in piles of garbage it’s not surprising they pick up germs and bacteria. Unfortunately they will spread said germs and bacteria to homes and businesses, and to food and food prep areas. E.coli and Salmonella are just a sampling of what a roach infestation could introduce.

Cockroaches can cause asthma and allergies. According to the United States Environmental Agency (EPA) asthma symptoms can be triggered in some individuals by certain proteins found in cockroach droppings and saliva.
