Now that summer is coming to an end, you may think you’re in the clear from mosquitoes. Unfortunately, that’s not the case! Due to the high humidity, mosquitoes are still going strong. All the outdoor events you’ve got planned could still be ruined by these annoying pests. And the diseases and threats they pose are as high as ever.

Along with being itchy and irritating, mosquito bites can actually pose severe health threats. They can spread numerous diseases. Some of these diseases include West Nile virus, encephalitis, malaria, yellow fever, Zika virus, tularemia, and canine heartworm. These insects may be small, but they pack a big punch. They are one of the most dangerous pests in the US. The risk of developing these diseases in our area is smaller than in others, but we should still protect ourselves against them as much as possible. The CDC predicted that insect-spread diseases would triple this year. Therefore, we should never underestimate these small creatures.

Some steps you can take to reduce mosquito activity in your yard is eliminating standing water sources. Mosquitoes use water sources to breed and they don’t need a lot of water to do so. The built-up rainwater in buckets or children’s toys in the yard could be used for breeding sights. Eliminate all standing water and you’ll eliminate the breeding on your property. This doesn’t eliminate adult mosquitoes from your property, however. To reduce mosquitoes from entering your property, make sure to mow the lawn frequently and trim bushes. They like to use these places for hiding. Always protect yourself with bug sprays and keep screens on any openings to your home.
