raccoon in the woods

Cute little raccoons seem harmless, don’t they? Unfortunately, they’re not. Raccoons, a member of the procyonid family, are small mammals that can become a big problem if they take up residence in or around your home. They typically have gray fur and a signature black mask around their eyes; are approximately 2 - 2 1/2 feet in length; and weigh between 15-40 pounds, depending on age, time of year, and how rich their diet is. Raccoons also have sharp teeth and claws that are strong enough to inflict serious harm upon humans and their pets. One of the most frequent carriers of the rabies virus, along with a host of other harmful diseases, you do not want raccoons living in your house!

Fall is the perfect season for raccoons to seek shelter from the cooler temperatures that November brings. This time of year is when sheds, porches, attics, dryer vents, and basements become tempting residences for these animals. Raccoons living and nesting inside of empty spaces such as walls can cause serious property damage. They love to get into garbage and, with their dextrous hands, they can open just about any garbage container, leaving a terrible mess in their wake. Human houses make perfect raccoon homes, in their eyes - warm and comfortable, with a steady food and water source.

Raccoons pose potential danger if allowed to freely roam your property. They carry diseases (a result of their trash-loving nature) and, if cornered or threatened, they can attack humans or pets. If you come into contact with a raccoon and are bitten or scratched, seek medical attention immediately. Rabid raccoons are much more likely to approach a human, so if you spot a raccoon acting strangely or out in broad daylight, keep a safe distance and call wildlife control experts such as Big Blue Bug Solutions.

You should always consult a professional when dealing with raccoons. Due to their potentially aggressive and unpredictable nature, it is best to leave raccoon removal to the experts. We have the knowledge, tools, and experiences to safely and humanely remove wildlife. Never try to touch or remove raccoons or other wild animals yourself from your Rhode Island, Massachusetts, or Connecticut property.

If you suspect that raccoons have made themselves comfortable on, in, or around your property, don’t wait - give the professionals a call at Big Blue Bug Solutions!
