Spiders are some of the most common pests in Southern Maine. Several thousand species of arachnids are in the Portland area, and several thousand more are located in our residential and commercial backyards.

Most spiders have the same general set of characteristics: eight legs, six or more eyes, and a set of piercing fangs. All spiders possess some form of venom and at least one pair of fangs, although it is a common misconception that they're all able to bite humans. In truth, only a few spiders can and will bite humans when threatened.

Below is a list of the most common spider species in Portland:

  • The European Garden Spider

  • American Grass Spider

  • The Shamrock Spider

  • Giant Lichen Orb Weaver

Most spider species cannot pierce human skin and cannot affect human health with their venom. However, some bites can be severe and even potentially infected. It is crucial to keep an eye on your recent spider bite to ensure no reaction occurs.

Medically dangerous spiders are not native to our part of Maine, and their presence is infrequent. You would only contact a hazardous species such as a black widow or brown recluse by importing goods. However, it is wise to practice all general spider control steps in preventing infestations.

Keep Spiders Off Your Southern Maine Lawn With These Tips

Spider infestations could be hinting at more than what meets the eye. Severe infestations may point to an underlying pest prey problem in or outside the house.

Check out these helpful tips to prevent spiders and their pest prey from wandering into your home:

  • Practice all general pest control advice; reduce indoor humidity, keep the home as clean as possible, and check around the house for leaks or clogged drains. Dehumidifiers can help to eliminate part of your moisture problem, but they may not be enough to repair all of it.

  • Seal up any potential entry points that could give pests or spiders access to your home. Use waterproof sealants to fill cracks, gaps, and crevices, and pay special attention to your doors and windows. A local maintenance specialist should address significant repairs

  • Proper food and trash storage are essential to prevent pest infestations. Remove filled trash bags from home at least once per week. For additional protection, consider storing recyclables outside the house (and only when thoroughly washed).

  • Wipe away any spider webs formed around the inside and outside of the home. Pay special attention to eaves, walls, and corners!
