It’s that time of the year again and if you haven’t already been tortured by the buzzing and biting of mosquitoes then you are a lucky. For most New Englanders mosquitoes play a major role each summer when trying to enjoy cookouts, swimming, and other outdoor activities. But just because they are common does not make them any less of a threat to you and your family. Mosquitoes can spread diseases through mosquito bites and should always be avoided.

Contrary to the belief that all mosquitoes bite, it is only actually the females who are responsible for the very itchy bumps left on your skin. Unfortunately each bite is like a small injection into your skin which means that diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and West Nile virus can be spread through a bite. For this reason as well as the general annoyance of constantly swatting away mosquitoes, it is important to learn how to control them from taking over your Rhode Island property.

Mosquito control tips from Big Blue Bug Solutions:

  • Remove any items from your property that collect with water such as toys, bird baths, old tires, and plant pots.

  • Fill in holes around the exterior that fill with water after rainfall.

  • Make sure that ditches are flowing with water and not standing with water. You may need to dig the ditch out until water does flow.

  • Clean out gutters so that they do not collect debris and stop water from flowing through them.

  • Make sure to keep pools and hot tubs covered when you are not using them.

  • Avoid outdoor events at ideal mosquito feeding times which are around dusk and later into the evening.

  • Wear insect repellent and cover your skin with lose fitting clothing when you know you will be in extra buggy areas.

  • Consider a mosquito net hat for extreme cases when you will be stuck around mosquito masses.

At Big Blue Bug Solutions we encourage residents of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and all of New England to get outside this summer, plan outdoor events and activities. Just take necessary precautions before you head out. And for those whose property has been overtaken by mosquitoes then call Big Blue Bug Solutions to learn more about our mosquito control services that can reduce biting mosquito populations by 90%!
