Living in South Portland, Maine, you have plenty of beautiful locations to visit and vibrant changes that come with each season. While nature is certainly a wonderful environment to experience away from home, no South Portland resident wants to face the stress of wildlife creatures, insects, or spiders inside their home. One of the pests we face in our area is stink bugs. Stink bugs are a common insect pest in Maine, and if you’re not careful, they could make a comeback and take over your property. Between the loud buzzing sound they make when they fly over your head and the putrid smell they produce when threatened or crushed, stink bugs are one species of insect pest you definitely want to avoid.

When do stink bugs invade?

When you think of stink bugs, you probably think of fall weather, right? Stink bugs are known for being a highly annoying pest as soon as the cooler weather hits, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t around during the summer. In fact, you could have many stink bugs living around the exterior of your home. However, the problems we face with stink bugs only start happening as they begin to seek shelter after the warmth of summer has passed. As summer turns to fall, stink bugs will begin gathering on the warm sunny sides of buildings. From there, it’s only a matter of time before they find a gap or crevice and make their way inside. If you don’t start preparing for the return of stink bugs now, you could end up with a smelly problem in your South Portland home.

Tips to Keep Stink Bugs Out of Your South Portland Home

The fact that stink bugs tend to congregate and live in large numbers means they can be difficult to get rid of unless you have some help. This doesn’t mean you can’t follow a few preventative tips now—while it’s still warm—to keep stink bugs from invading later when the weather begins to grow colder.

  • Install door sweeps

  • Seal cracks and crevices in your foundation, walls, and siding

  • Repair or replace torn window screens

  • Seal outdoor vents and openings with screens or covers

  • Repair gaps and holes around your exterior doors and windows
